Pregnancy Support at YourBack Chiropractic

Woman holding pregnant bellyYou want to feel good while you are pregnant so you can enjoy the experience and look forward to motherhood. Pregnancy brings about many changes to your body, though, that can cause a range of symptoms. Mississauga Chiropractor Dr. Andersen works with pregnant women to address their discomfort and keep the body aligned and functioning properly.

Chiropractic care when pregnant is recommended for many of the same reasons as when you are not carrying a baby. You need basic care for your spine and other areas of the body, such as:

  • Knees
  • Shoulders
  • Digestion
  • Pelvic position

The weight of the baby puts more stress on these areas. As a result, you may change your posture, how you sit or lay down, and even the way you move your body. These changes to daily tasks cause misalignments. Joints are under a great deal of pressure during pregnancy that can worsen the issues. Changes to the way you eat and what you eat causes digestive issues that can be treated with chiropractic care.

Dr. Andersen typically recommends chiropractic care for women over the course of their pregnancies. The initial corrective stage typically involves 20 to 30 treatments over the first 12 weeks. From week 32 to 36, she recommends two times per month, and then weekly from 36 to 40 weeks of pregnancy. She also recommends that you continue chiropractic care after you give birth, and she can also see your newborn during that time.

The benefits of gentle, consistent chiropractic care during pregnancy are far-reaching. Dr. Andersen checks the position of the pelvis to identify any issues that affects the neurology of the uterus and pelvic region. Keeping these areas in alignment and functioning properly prepares your body for childbirth and gives you a healthier pregnancy. In many cases, chiropractic care for pregnant women has resulted in shorter and easier deliveries, as well as less pain during childbirth. She also monitors your back for any changes that are caused by larger breasts.

Dr. Andersen also works with pregnant women to support beneficial nutrition for them and their unborn babies. A baby in the womb needs nutrients from the mother for proper brain development, gut health, and other stages of growth. Dr. Andersen works with you to find foods that optimize nutrients, and she may recommend probiotics during your pregnancy.

Dr. Andersen uses special tables and pregnancy pillows in her office to accommodate pregnant women. The tables have cutouts for your abdomen to help you relax and feel comfortable during the treatments. She uses an activator to make gentle adjustments.

Chiropractic care is safe for pregnant women, but the techniques used must be gentle on the mother and baby. For more than 40 years, Dr. Andersen has worked with women to help them have comfortable pregnancies, shorter delivery times, and healthy babies.
